FAQ: Dentures

What are dentures?

Dentures are a set of removable prosthetic teeth that are designed to fit securely into your mouth during use. They offer patients a variety of benefits that go beyond restored aesthetics including supporting your mouth muscles to prevent facial sagging and giving your the functionality of a full set of teeth. We create our dentures by taking several dental impressions of your soft tissues to ensure they fit comfortably and securely within the shape of your mouth.

Am I a good candidate for dentures?

A consultation with Dr. Zack or Elizabeth Huggins with help determine if you are a good candidate for dentures. Dentures are primarily used to help patients restore their smiles after they’ve experienced tooth loss. If you have recently had several teeth removed or are missing several teeth,  our entire team would be happy to see you and discuss all of our restorative dentistry options with you to see what will best meet your needs.

How long do dentures last?

Dentures can last many years depending on how you care for them. If you find that your dentures are slipping around while you are using them, please let us know. Dr. Zack and Elizabeth Huggins can help make adjustments to your dentures to ensure they fit securely in your mouth. Even after you receive your dentures, you should still schedule regular dental hygiene check ups so we can continue to monitor the maintenance of your dentures as well as the health of your soft tissues and jawbone.

How should I care for my dentures?

Denture care is the key to maintaining the longevity of your dentures. You should never clean your dentures with regular toothpaste, hot water, or bleach-based products. After removing your dentures, brush them using a soft bristle denture brush and denture toothpaste. At night, keep your dentures in a cup of water or denture cleaner while you sleep. Make sure to rinse off the cleaner before putting the dentures back in your mouth. If your denture still appears unclean, you can place it in a 50%/50% mix of hydrogen peroxide and water for 5 minutes at a time. This will help clean tough areas.
